Vehicle Evading Police Smashes into Tampa Nightspot, Claiming Four Dead and Eleven Injured

An speeding car while fleeing law enforcement crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on the weekend, killing 4 people and injuring eleven in a historic neighborhood of Tampa, known for its nightlife and tourists.

Aerial patrol team with the local police department observed the car driving dangerously on a freeway at about 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been seen illegally racing in a different area, according to a police department statement.

The Florida highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and tried to execute a tactic that entails striking a rear fender of a fleeing car to make it to lose control, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was ineffective.

State police officers “disengaged” as the vehicle sped toward the historic downtown district near downtown, local police said. Eventually, the driver failed to maintain control of the car and hit more than a dozen people outside the establishment, officials confirmed.

Three victims died at the scene and a fourth victim died at a medical facility. By the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in serious state, and 8 additional patients were being treated at local medical centers but were classified as stable, police stated. Two additional victims experienced minor injuries and declined treatment at the site. All 15 victims are grown individuals.

“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, we are with the families of the victims and everyone who were impacted,” the local top law enforcement officer said in a statement.

Officers identified the suspect as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on the weekend and is being detained at the local detention facility.

Legal records showed Sampson has been accused with 4 counts of reckless driving causing death and 4 counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with severe harm or fatality. Each are serious felonies. No attorney was recorded for the accused.

“The community is mourning the tragedy,” said Tampa’s mayor, previously was Tampa’s initial woman police chief, in a message on social media.
“Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into the incident is continuing, and efforts are underway to obtain explanations,” the statement added.

Lately, certain regions and municipal authorities have pushed to restrict the employment of rapid car chases to protect both civilians and officers. Following a rise in fatalities, a recent study funded by the federal authorities recommended police chases to be minimized, explaining that the danger to suspects, personnel and bystanders often exceeds the immediate requirement to take someone into custody.

Still, Florida has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s road police amending its guidelines to relax restrictions on the application of car chases and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis described those tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
