Three Lions Coach Explains The Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Today, he is focused supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both test boundaries. Their methods include psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the England collective and rejects terms such as "break".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect the best aspects from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are emotional wins for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, attacking high up. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. While training for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
