The Princess of Wales's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the charity, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
