Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Has The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be asked about his position after a further convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their 9th loss in twelve matches, representing the team's poorest run after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received significant backing from the top,” Slot commented.
“It would be nice to change things and get a victory obviously but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He continued, “I accept my position. It is not the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful to the team and for me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard discussions I sense the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Reaction
The manager expressed regret over recurring failings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones remarked.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond being angry internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He went on, “It's tough because I’m playing for the team I support. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Reds side experiencing a spell such as this with results this poor.”
He finished, “But we still have that badge on our shirts. And until that badge is taken away, we will always fight.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to the top, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
